WebP in Chrome, Picasa, Gmail With New Features

Remember WebP (Weppy ) ? Let me re-introduce weppy briefly before we start. This is a new image format that Google is working on to make websites work faster by reducing image file sizes without compromising much on the quality of it.

Google recently announced updates on the WebP project and shared some good news about it being supported in Picasa and Gmail now. There have been lot of improvements in the basic architecture of WebP according to the Chromium blog post. If you are using Chrome or Opera, you view some example in the gallery here.

Now, to the newest features, according to the blog post. “WebP is now natively supported in Chrome and Opera. Google products including Gmail and Picasa Web Albums, have also added support to WebP so you can share, send and receive WebP images. WebP support is coming to AppEngine. In addition, Google Instant Previews now store images in WebP to reduce their storage needs.”

Read the blog post for more information.
